A new bill is going into effect allowing the city to padlock or close any stores that repeatedly sell uncertified batteries for e-bikes. This will resemble the recent Operation to Padlock stores selling cannabis illegally.

E-bike have been a big cause of fires in recent years. This year alone there have been more than 200, according to the FDNY. The batteries that power the e-bikes can overheat causing the liquid in those batteries to start a fire. This new law requires sellers in store and online to regulate their batteries in an effort to avoid more fires.

The new law also requires stores to display the city's new fire safety disclosure sign that helps shoppers understand certification and how to safely store and charge their e-bikes.
