Co-op City is the largest co-operative housing development, home to about 45,000 Bronx residents, who now won't have to travel far to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
The area has seen a below average vaccination rate. Mayor Bill de Blasio says that this new site is a key part of reaching his goal to vaccinate 5 million New Yorkers by June.
The site opened at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Moving forward, it will be open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The Department of Health says that in the first few days the site will vaccine a couple hundred people and then ramp up efforts until they reach 1,000 vaccines a day.
The newly elected Rep. Jamaal Bowman was a big part of the effort to get this site in Co-op City. He says he is doing everything he can to bring even more sites in the future.
