Gov. Kathy Hochul signed two educational bills aimed to diversify the teaching force and make sure schools in the city are safer.
The governor says a report from Education Trust found that 1 in 5 students attend a school without any teachers of color. She says it's a concern one of the two bills will tackle head-on so that students can walk into their classrooms and work with educators who look like them.
In addition, the bill would assist in developing and implementing programs to retain teachers.
The proposed law would also ensure a plan is in place to keep teachers and students protected from any foreseen event. Hochul said the new bills are fundamental for students and teachers to be successful.
The governor also stated that educational funding has gone up 17% since she has taken office.
