State officials say that they do not want New Jersey residents to have to worry about their gas, water or electricity being turned off now that the state’s utility bill moratorium has ended.
Acting Gov. Shelia Oliver and the head of the state Board of Public Utilities say that there are programs that can help people who have fallen behind on their payments. But people who need help must reach out on their own.
“I understand that some folks – this may be the first time that they’re reaching out for help and they may be embarrassed. We’re one family here in New Jersey – all 9.3 million of us,” says BPU President Joe Fiordaliso.
Officials say over 1 million people statewide owe more than $700 million on water, gas and electric bills.
