A new maintenance and operations facility will be the home base for New York City Parks Department employees who care for Orchard Beach and the city’s largest public park.
News 12 cameras got an exclusive look at the new $35.9 million Orchard Beach Maintenance & Operations Building.
It's a new, two-story, 11,538-square-foot structure near Orchard Beach and the Promenade.
The facility features office and storage space for Parks operations, a large yard with parking, a fueling station and electric vehicle chargers.
It was intentionally built on a raised lot to remain safe from flooding after the previous facility was flooded from Superstorm Sandy.
City leaders say the building's features and centralized location will make it easier for Parks staff to service the beach and visitors, including keeping the beach clean.
The project, which is a collaboration between City Parks and the NYC Department of Design and Construction, is expected to finish years early, thanks to the Design-Build program, which streamlines the process by designing and building at the same time.
The facility is expected to be ready for summer 2025.
