The Metropolitan Transit Authority unveiled the R211 subway cars for the first time, as the new cars are now in service on the A line starting on Friday.
The inaugural ride left from the 207th Street station on Friday afternoon. The new cars are equipped with surveillance cameras, and 1,200 of the R211 cars will replace older model cars with the individual orange seats by 2025, according to the MTA.
"These new trains enable us to run more service, to run more frequent service," said MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber. "They speak to the system that are on the right of way and that enables us to run more trains more closely... that’s why they’re so essential to the growth.”
All 20 of the first R211s will have an open gangway concept, allowing riders to roam freely between cars. The MTA says that if the open cars are a hit among commuters, they will have the option to purchase over 400 more.
