If you're heading out this Memorial Day weekend, News 12 is on pump patrol to help you save money.
AAA says gas prices are the highest they've been since 2014. The average price per gallon is $3.17.
In Brooklyn, gas prices are $2.89 a gallon for regular gas at the 76 gas station on Mother Gaston Boulevard on the corner of Sutter Avenue.
The owner the 76 gas station said he had no idea that his prices were so low until he turned on News 12. And he wasn't the only viewer that News 12 found.
Ronald Jones, who lives nearby, also saw the News 12 Pump Patrol report Friday morning.
"This cat came from upstate, and I thought, 'you come from upstate to Brooklyn just to get 2.89 a gallon of gas? No!'" said Jones about Ron Williams, who traveled from upstate to visit his mother in Brooklyn.
He said he didn't need gas, but saw the price, so he took advantage of it.
"I stopped. I didn't even need the gas. I filled it up the last couple of dollars because it was so low," Williams said.
In the Bronx, you'll pay $2.83 a gallon at the Citgo on Baychester Avenue, according to gasbuddy.com.
But again, across the board, AAA says gas prices are up more than a dollar a gallon since this time last year. AAA says the market is still trying to recover from the pipeline shutdown, and you'll likely find even higher prices in popular travel spots because of lower fuel supply.
And if you're headed out onto the roads to celebrate the unofficial kickoff to summer you will not be alone out there. AAA says 37 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend by car and plane, which is up 60% since last year.
If you're a Brooklyn resident, headed up north you may want to make a quick stop in the Bronx where you'll save about 6 cents a gallon.
