Nonprofit: Kittens found double-bagged, dumped in Sunset Park garbage bin

Four kittens were found double-bagged and dumped in a garbage bin in Sunset Park on Sunday, according to the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition.

News 12s Nadia Galindo visited the Brooklyn Cat Cafe, which is run by the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition, to see the four kittens now in their care.

Executive director Anne Levin said the kittens are about two weeks old and lucky to be alive.

"A friend of the cafe was walking his dog down the street, heard kittens crying," she said.

That good Samaritan made the decision to open a bag in a trash bin and found the four kittens inside, clinging to life.

"He pretty much saved them from a really terrible death, either suffocation or being crushed by the garbage or starving," said Levin.

She said cases of animal cruelty are more common than one might think, and said legal action is rarely taken agains perpetrators of the crime.

"There is no effective cruelty investigations in New York City anymore," said Levin.

News 12 reached out to the NYPD and ASPCA, both agencies said they do not have information on this case reported to them.

The rescued kittens are now being cared for in a foster home and will be up for adoption when they are two to three months old.
