Long Islanders made the most of their Sunday snow day, finding creative and practical ways to deal with the winter weather.
If you drove down Split Rock Road in Syosset, it was hard to miss a towering snowman standing more than 6 feet tall in Gerald Zhao’s front yard.
“It’s the first time in my life building a snowman this big actually. I’ve built smaller ones before,” Zhao said.
Instead of a button nose and two eyes made out of coal, Zhao used two dates and a carrot. For him, the snow day was about having fun with what Mother Nature delivered.
“There’s a lot of snow. What else can I do with it?” he said.
While some residents embraced the lighter side of the storm, others focused on digging out. Scott Wells spent part of his day clearing his driveway and freeing his car from the snow in Syosset. His snow day motto was “Keep ahead of it.”
“I’m not winded, I just finished,” Wells said. “Do it slowly and you live. Take your time.”
Out in Huntington, neighbors woke up to snow-covered streets as highway crews worked throughout the day to keep roads passable. With more snow expected Sunday night, the town’s Highway Department said it was prepared to handle the conditions.
“We will salt all the roads. All the hills will get a salt-sand mix,” said Huntington Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino. “Then what we do is go out and push back on all the streets. Tomorrow is a holiday, we hope to get the roads completely wide open.”
