Hundreds of additional U.S. hospitals will begin vaccinating their workers today.
The vaccine will reach nearly 500 more sites between today and tomorrow.
Nassau University Medical Center is one of the hospitals that received the vaccine today, and it will be administered to some staff members.
NUMC received 797 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.
The hospital gave News 12 exclusive access to be a part of its journey from UPS to their freezers, purchased especially for the lifesaving treatment.
Once it made its way down the halls of the hospital, it went to the pharmacy where a team had just minutes to make the transfer.
"We've had a lot of conferences and phone calls, and we've tried to prepare, but this is it, this is real life you know so it's just an exciting moment for us at this point," says Michael Keene, assistant director of pharmacy at NUMC.
There were things they expected about the process – temperature checks on the box and a significant amount of unpacking.
In months to come, they hope to fill the freezer with many more doses for the community.
"This has been a really rough year. Here at the hospital, here in the United States with all the suffering and all the deaths and this provides hope for everybody,” says Keene.
