=One of the suspects accused in the brutal beating of an off-duty police officer in Westchester Square was in court Thursday morning.
Wayne Lucas, 23, of Staten Island, appeared before a judge in The Bronx.
The pair is accused of attacking NYPD Officer Chowdhury Nafees at knifepoint on Saint Peters Avenue.
Police say they stole Nafees’ wallet, cellphone and service weapon.
Lucas has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted robbery, attempted aggravated assault of an officer and attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
"A rookie from just September did not deserve this when his job is to protect the very same people that caused him harm that day. We are wishing him a speedy recovery," said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
If convicted, Lucas faces up to 20 years to life in prison. His next court date is set for Sept. 12.
"You attack one of our police officers, you attack every New York City police officer. We will stay united until justice is served for our brother," said Police Benevolent Association president Patrick Hendry.
