To celebrate Women’s History Month, the New York Botanical Garden hosted a breakfast Wednesday to honor five Bronx women - with Gov. Kathy Hochul headlining the event.
For the first time in two years, the New York Botanical Garden held a breakfast to honor women in the community working for residents of public housing, community groups and immigrants.
Hochul kicked off the event as the first woman to serve as New York's governor. She, along with the first female Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and Rep. Ritchie Torres, wished the room of Bronx leaders a happy Women's History Month.
They paid tribute to five honorees: Adama Bah, Mirtha Colon, Terry Lawson, Nilka Martell and Norma Saunders - all leaders who were honored for their work during the pandemic, their continuing advocacy for the underserved as well as their commitment to the victims of the Twin Parks fire.
Women's History Month runs through the end of March, but many of the speakers said it shouldn't just be one month that these accomplishments are celebrated.
