Enforcement of the Key to NYC vaccine pass starts Monday and both employees and patrons who want to access to indoor restaurants and fitness facilities will have to show that they have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says no one will be allowed to dine in or use indoor fitness facilities without proof of one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. He says he is strengthening enforcement due to a surge in delta variant cases.
The policy has been in effect since the middle of August but enforcement begins Monday with the city being able to issue up to $1,000 fines to indoor facilities that fail to ask customers for proof of vaccinations.
Officials say there will be routine inspections of these businesses.
The policy doesn't apply to everyone. Locations like senior centers, places of worship or residential buildings are exempt. It also doesn't apply to children under the age of 12 who can't get the vaccine.
