As New Yorkers try to find ways to beat the heat, the city’s Emergency Management team has partnered with the Salvation Army to offer free cooling centers throughout the area.
Temperatures across the city are feeling like 100 degrees.
"It’s really scary for older people, senior citizens and adults,” said Rene Aponte, of Bed-Stuy. “It's just scary. I just hope that it gets cooler because this is too much!"
People trying to battle the heat have been taking steps like staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and using cooling centers. For Thursday and Friday, people can use those cooling centers to hang out in the air conditioning, drink fresh water and cool down.
The Salvation Army told News 12 its Bay Ridge, Bedford Temple, Bronx Tremont, Harlem Temple, Port Richmond and Times Square locations are operating as cooling centers. Pets are allowed inside too.
"When it gets this hot, we find a lot of people who come to us are seniors,” added Captain Kevin Byran, director at the Salvation Army in Bed-Stuy. “They’re walking down the street and if the temperature is as high as it is today, they can get a heat stroke. We want to provide a safe place. A place that's cool. That they can come and just rest and get out of the heat. Just to preserve their health."
The Salvation Army in Bed-Stuy will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
