Mayor Eric Adams announced a new commissioner for the Office of Emergency Management Thursday.
Zach Iscol was named the new Office of Emergency Management Commissioner. He is joined by Christina Farrell, who is the new first deputy commissioner and the first woman to hold that position.
Iscol is a decorated combat Marine Corps officer. He also established the Headstrong Project to provide veterans with mental health support.
Farrell has been the acting commissioner for the past month and has served on the emergency management team for 19 years.
The OEM deals with getting the city through not only snowstorms and hurricanes but also the pandemic and blackouts. It works with agencies across city government to develop disaster readiness plans and respond to those emergencies.
Adams says he is confident these two leaders will deliver on his "get stuff done" mentality and work to implement strategies so that emergencies don't become crises.
