NYC officials hold drill to prep for public safety in winter weather

Participants dove into forecasting and understanding the information they receive from the National Weather Service in order to make smart decisions.

New York City officials are looking ensure the safety of the five boroughs and keep them winter weather ready this season.  
Officials held a functional exercise, drawing in many city agencies and City Hall. The drill was to simulate a response to a weather emergency, and the goal was to have responding departments practice making information-based decisions in the midst of a storm.  
Participants dove into forecasting and understanding the information they receive from the National Weather Service in order to make smart decisions with the safety of New York City residents in mind.  
“When that big storm hits… we want to make sure we are ready. Not just for the storm, but for you,” said Paula Carlson, executive director of exercises at the New York City Office of Emergency Management.  
Leaders say they’re focused on making every second count and making sure they’re comfortable making the tough calls.
