Public schools across New York are officially back in session, and along with the usual first-day excitement and jitters, students are also facing a major shift in classroom culture - a new bell-to-bell statewide cellphone ban.
At Mother Hale Academy PS 65X in Mott Haven, the school day now begins not just with morning announcements and classroom greetings, but also with students locking away their phones in secure pouches until the final bell rings.
The policy is part of a statewide cellphone ban that went into effect in May as part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s $254 billion state budget. Gov, Hochul says the ban is meant to eliminate digital distractions and refocus classroom environments on learning.
“I'm excited! I don't need my phone because I'm here to learn,” said Allison, a student at Mother Hale Academy, echoing the positive attitude school staff say they are hoping to cultivate. Despite the big change, educators at Mother Hale are making the most of the transition to help ease in incoming students. The school kicked off the academic year with music, smiles, and a strong message of encouragement.
Principal Jessica LoBoen-Morrobel tells News 12 that this year’s school-wide theme is “Kindness,” and the administration is working hard to ensure students feel supported as they adapt to the new rules.
LoBoen-Morrobel also says that Mother Hale Academy is on a mission to make the transition a positive one, showing students that going phone-free doesn’t mean missing out, but rather tuning in to what really matters.
