The children of a detective who was killed in a mass shooting in Midtown were awarded scholarships Tuesday by the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the nonprofit "Folds of Honor," a promise that his legacy will never be forgotten.
Detective Didarul Islam was a father of three, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a dedicated officer who served the NYPD for three and a half years.
He was killed on July 28 in a shooting that targeted the NFL headquarters.
"This is what true first responders and true heroes do. They run to the fire. They run to help with no questions asked," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Islam's family, members of the NYPD, the Police Benevolent Association all gathered at the 47th Precinct to honor Detective Islam's memory and show their support.
Islam's family says grappling with his death has not been easy, and his young children still struggle with understanding the loss.
The scholarship was given to the children, with the hope of them continuing their education.
Islam's sons shared that one day they want to follow in their father's footsteps.
"When I grow up and I'm a police officer, I can't wait to be a detective," said his oldest son, Ahyan.
