Some NYCHA buildings in the Bronx are undergoing major renovations and being taken over by new management companies.
It's part of the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) Program. Developments selected for the program will receive renovations, new property management and expanded on-site social services.
Buildings will also be converted to the federally-funded program called Project-Based Section 8.
Jonathan Gouveia, the chief real estate officer for NYCHA, told News 12 that their focus is partnering with residents to meet their needs for repairs.
"We want to make sure they have a seat at the table. They help select the PACT partners who come in and who are going to deliver the renovations. Who's going to deliver the ongoing property management after the conversion," he said.
Gouveia noted the cumulative impact of deterioration in NYCHA buildings to be a main issue. He said federal funding has been on the decline, which is why these repairs are especially needed.
News 12 visited a building that recently underwent a change in management as part of the PACT Program. News 12 crews spoke with the president of the tenants association at 2070 Clinton Ave. to see how the new management has been handling building operations.
"Even thinking about it, I get very emotional. I walk around here, it's like this is a different place because it's clean," said Queen McFarland, the president of the tenants association. She told News 12 she has seen a drastic improvement in cleanliness of the building, and she is excited to see the renovations take place.
NYCHA officials told News 12 they are focusing on pest management, improving heat and cooling systems, installing new elevators, managing lead and mold and improving inspections.
There are over 12,000 apartments that are part of the PACT Program in the Bronx. Close to 10,000 have already been converted. NYCHA is still working to seek out buildings that are in need of comprehensive repairs.
