Police say a 16-year-old boy was shot in the chest and died late Saturday night on Auburn Place, outside of the Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene.
So far, police have not released any information on what led to the shooting or information about a suspect. There are multiple security cameras on buildings up and down the block where the shooting happened.
One neighbor told News 12 that they thought they had heard fireworks going off overnight before learning they were hearing gun shots.
Steven Middleton, who lives across the street, was visibly shaken when told that it was a teenager who had been killed.
"I have nieces and nephews, and it tears me apart…You can't let your kids go outside without the fear of them dying," he said.
Neighbors were disturbed that the shooting happened near Fort Greene Park, a library and an elementary school.
"Kids are out there every single day," said Middleton. "This is a kid neighborhood, they're everywhere."
Carl L. told News 12 that he wasn’t sure if more police would make residents feel safer.
"It's nothing that the city can do. It's something that's instructed in our families. That's just been screwed up," he said.
