A child was shot Saturday afternoon in Fordham just a day before his 3rd birthday.
News 12 sources say it happened as the boy was leaving TD Bank with his mother – the shots rang out from across the street in front of the Capital One Bank.
According to sources, the mother ran around the block with her son to try and get help once that single bullet pierced her son in his backside. Police say it happened around 1:40 p.m.
The scene of the shooting had bullet markers on the ground. A glass window at the TD Bank had shattered.
Mayor Eric Adams, who earlier in the day eulogized fallen NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller, was at the scene and spoke with police. He said the shooting was a testament to why “guns should be taken off the street of New York City.”
The 2-year-old, who police called a “bystander,” is expected to make a full recovery. He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.
Police say the shooter, who has not yet been apprehended, fled on foot toward Creston Avenue on 190th Street. He was described as a male in his 30s, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, black jacket with fur around the collar, light blue jeans and red sneakers.
