The NYPD announced it will be cracking down on private sanitation companies.
This comes after they say inspections in Manhattan and Brooklyn found multiple violations on every single private trash truck stopped.
Police say since 2016 there's been up to 20 deadly crashes involving those trucks.
"These collisions often involve trucks not yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists, traveling at excessive speeds, sometimes in the wrong direction, running red lights. When you factor in faulty equipment such as worn out breaks, these 20-ton trucks become death traps," says NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.
The NYPD says increased inspections will continue during the overnight hours.
In the Bronx, Sanitation Salvage's license was suspended in August after what the city calls a series of dangerous practices.
Earlier this month, the city's Business Integrity Commission said it could resume collections with an independent monitor making sure safety protocols are being followed.
