A man shot seven other people, at least one fatally, and tried to light himself on fire at Bronx Lebanon Hospital before ultimately turning the gun on himself Friday afternoon, police say.
A law enforcement official said the shooter was wearing a lab coat with a rifle concealed inside.
Police say the man, a former employee of the hospital, began firing at 2:55 p.m. A short while later, police said the shooter shot and killed himself. He was identified by sources as 45-year-old Dr. Henry Bello. Police say at least one other person was killed and six were injured.
Hospital staffers said training exercises helped prepare them for the situation.
A man connected to the hospital told News 12 that an initial alarm went off related to a report of a fire, which resulted in the automatic shutoff of elevators in the hospital. That meant there was only stairway access when an alert system announced an active shooter event to hospital personnel just minutes later.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said the suspect apparently attempted to set himself on fire, activating the fire alarm.
Police found him dead of a gunshot wound. He was wearing a white "medical-type" coat, O'Neill said.
Police also found a female victim dead on 17th floor. Six additional victims were found wounded on the 16th floor -- five seriously injured, one wounded in the leg. They were taken to the hospital's emergency room.
O'Neill did not confirm the gunman's name but said he was a former employee of the hospital.
The mayor and police commissioner declined to take questions, saying investigators were still digging into the matter.
Hospital staff undergoes emergency training once a week, including an active shooter response exercise on Monday.
