A 38-year-old Bronx man was charged with first-degree rape – accused of assaulting a woman near Bergen Avenue and East 149th Street earlier this month.

The initial NYPD report says the victim was walking around 1 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 when she was approached by the suspect, now identified as Papa Diop, who asked for directions.

She was then “forcibly raped.” The suspect fled on foot, the NYPD said. The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition.

Sources say a police officer recognized him from flyers around the borough and apprehended him on the 4 train this morning.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
