NYPD: Center Moriches man charged in son's death resigns, won't receive pension
Michael Valva, the man charged in the January death of his 8-year-old son in Suffolk County, has resigned from the NYPD, police officials confirmed.
News 12 reported last week that Valva's attorney announced his resignation in court. The NYPD has now confirmed this and added that he will not be receiving a pension.
Thomas Valva, 8, died in January after allegedly being forced to spend the night in an unheated garage by his father and his fiancée.
A grand jury indictment charged both with second-degree murder. They're being held without bail and face life in prison, if convicted.
Prosecutors have outlined what they say was a long history of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Michael Valva and Pollina. They say Thomas and his older brother, Anthony, were denied food. They described how the boys would go to school and eat crumbs off tables and searched for scraps in garbage cans and under the bleachers.
Thomas' mother Justyna Zubko-Valva says she had been reporting the alleged abuse to Child Protective Services, but she says nothing was done.
