An officer was shot on 161st Street in Queens between 90th Avenue and Jamaica Avenue, according to the NYPD.

Police say an MTA bus driver traveling east on Jamaica Avenue flagged down two police officers from the 103rd Precinct to report a male who was fighting with another passenger over a seat. When the officers approached the bus, the suspect tried to leave through the front door, which is when a struggle ensued.

Authorities say the suspect shoved officers and ran away. They say that when officers caught up with him, the suspect fired one shot, striking a 22-year-old officer in the hip.

The officer's partner fired two shots in response, and the suspect fled into a parking garage, according to police. Police recovered the suspect's jacket and sweatshirt. Video from the parking garage shows the suspect running away.

The NYPD says the suspect was last seen at the intersection of 161st St. and Hillside Avenue in a white t-shirt and black pants.

The officer is currently in surgery. The NYPD says the officer was assigned to his post at the 103rd Precinct three months ago.
