An NYPD detective was shot twice by what appears to be friendly fire in Queens, Mayor Eric Adams said.
The incident happened near the Whitestone Expressway Service Road and 22nd Street just before 9 a.m.
"During the apprehension, one detective from Queens narcotics was shot twice, wounded in the arm and leg. At this time, it appears this was a friendly fire incident. Thankfully these injuries are not life threatening. And he's expected to make a full recovery," said the mayor during a media briefing.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says officers discharged their weapons as they attempted to stop a man stealing a car from a victim.
The commissioner says the suspect was taken into custody, he was unarmed and has a lengthy criminal history. In addition, officials say he was just arrested and released on Thursday for a theft in Manhattan.
Officials are using the shooting as a moment to call on state lawmakers to change laws to prevent repeat offenders committing crimes.
Mayor Adamas says the wife of the injured detective is expecting a child.
The detective is expected to make a full recovery.
