NYPD officers and supporters of law enforcement rallied together Friday for peace and unity from the 50th Precinct to Van Cortlandt Park asking for the resources to do their job properly.
NYPD officers, fraternal organizations and supporters are marched to stop the violence in the Bronx and across New York City.
PBA President Pat Lynch and other supporters say bail reform and the chokehold ban, which prohibits any maneuver that restricts breathing while an officer makes as arrest, as well as recent efforts to defund the police, hurt the NYPD’s ability to keep the community safe.
Retired NYPD officer and rally organizer Sammy Ravelo says officers are afraid of getting arrested and are thinking twice before acting, which he says puts the community in danger.
"You don’t come on this job to get arrested, so you have a lot of second-guessing going on and that is the last thing that we want our men and women to be doing. They wanted to fix Minneapolis' problems here in New York City, and they failed miserably,” says Ravelo.
People at the rally called for community support to put pressure on legislators and the City Council to make change so that police can do their jobs properly and keep the city streets safe.
