Police say the sergeant responsible for watching a Bronx man in the 49th Precinct who was found unconscious in a holding cell has been put on modified leave.
Police say the victim, Samuel Reyes, was found with a slit around his neck and died two days later.
Family members of Reyes hired a lawyer requesting a special prosecutor to look into deadly police interactions.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton says in a statement that he is concerned Reyes was found in that condition as the sergeant was in charge of the prisoner.
