Five people, including two firefighters, were hurt during a three-alarm fire at an apartment building in Brooklyn early Monday, officials say.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. on Tilden Avenue and East 29th Street. A total of 33 units and 138 firefighters responded to the scene.

Tenants say the fire appears to have started on the second floor, and then extended to the third floor of the building.

Max Grayson says his friend’s back caught fire, and they both had to climb out of their second-floor window before firefighters arrived.

News 12 is told three tenants were treated for minor injuries.

Two firefighters were also treated on the scene for injuries. The injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

News 12 is told several people were trapped inside the building and had to be rescued by firefighters.

Diane Vante says she had to run out of the apartment without any of her belongings.

“They have to give me socks, pants, the only thing I had on when I came out was pajamas,” Vante says. “We really tied together and made sure everybody is safe because in my building, everybody is family.”

Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Sheridan says numerous tenants were escorted down ladders from the fire escapes by the fire department.

Firefighters were cleaning up the debris and trying to determine what caused the fire.

The Red Cross is working to help dozens of residents displaced by the fire.
