A shuttered juvenile detention center in Hunts Point could be on its way to a transformation.
The New York Economic Corporation is accepting proposals to redevelop what used to be the Spofford Detention Center. The facility has been closed for four years, but officials are hoping to reopen it under a new capacity.
While it was open, Spofford housed about 100 juvenile offenders. After it shut down in 2011, a report from the Correctional Association of New York revealed poor living conditions, and allegations of verbal and physical abuse by staff members.
Some local leaders want the youth center turned into affordable housing in hope of attracting more business to the neighborhood. Most residents are just hoping that the site can be turned into something positive for the community.
