Long Beach’s popular volleyball league was shut down on short notice after the town says it interfered with first responders on duty.
Long Beach's volleyball courts usually have hundreds of people taking part in a summer recreational league. However, most of the courts were empty on Wednesday.
According to Long Beach officials, the volleyball league was suspended because some participants weren't making room for first responders in an emergency lane.
The city made the announcement on Facebook, writing, "Despite repeated warnings, players have been uncooperative in keeping the emergency lane clear on Ocean Beach Park, which must be left open for first responders. While the leagues are much beloved, the choice between recreation and public safety is clear."
On Tuesday evening, a 30-year-old man went into cardiac arrest and died on his way to the hospital after nearly drowning in the ocean.
It's not clear if volleyball players prevented lifeguards from getting to him faster, but a Long Beach spokesperson says they have slowed rescuers down in the past.
Meanwhile, players say they hope their league gets back to normal soon so they won't be the only ones on the beach.
The city and the league say they are optimistic that they'll get going again in the near future.
