A Bay Shore man who stabbed a Suffolk County police officer multiple times was fatally shot Saturday morning by officers responding to a domestic incident, officials said.

According to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Robert Waring, three officers responded to a 911 call at 1138 Udall Rd. at 9:10 a.m. When one officer opened a screen door to the home, Taiquell Woodson charged at him with a knife.

Waring said the officer fell backward into the snow as Woodson stabbed him repeatedly – “clearly attempting to kill him.” The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest that officials say saved his life.

“One officer deployed his Taser, which was unsuccessful. A third officer fired his service weapon, striking Woodson and stopping the attack,” Waring said.

He said CPR was initiated on Woodson, 33, at the scene. He later died at South Shore University Hospital.

Woodson’s wife and 1-year-old child were not injured.

A Stony Brook University Hospital trauma center doctor said the wounded officer had wounds to his hands, both forearms and his face. He said the officers who applied a tourniquet to his wounds helped stop the bleeding at the scene. He is hopeful for a full recovery, though there might be some nerve damage in his dominant hand.

“It makes me sick to my stomach,” the doctor said, clearly emotional about the incident. He said it was the latest in a string of violent attacks on Suffolk police.

Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello called Woodson a “violent career felon” who was “intent on killing a police officer today.”

Waring did not elaborate on Woodson’s criminal record, only to say he was arrested for a robbery in Riverhead last year.

“This all happened in approximately five seconds,” said Waring. “This was a justified shooting.”

He also said the incident was captured on body cam video. It’s not clear when that will be released.
