A coalition of more than 60 organizations, religious leaders and elected officials gathered Thursday to support the reintroduction of Resolution 12-57 in the City Council.
The resolution calls on the New York City Department of Education to provide all grade levels with a curriculum focused on religious diversity.
"We must be investing in education and culturally responsive pedagogy to really get at the root of who we are and why we belong," said Councilmember Shahana Hanif, who was the main sponsor of the reintroduction of the resolution. "We must build stronger communities on a stronger democracy together."
Lawmakers say this resolution is essential due to the current rise in anti-religious bullying and hate crimes in New York City as well as across the United States.
