Hundreds of residents in West Farms have not had power in their homes since Monday night due to several manhole fires in the area. With the high temperatures, some of them had no choice but to leave their hot homes.
A Con Edison outage map showed hundreds of homes still left without power.
The FDNY tells News 12 that it responded to several manhole fires on East 179th Street around 9:20 p.m. There were also reports of an explosion sound heard in the area around midnight. It's unclear if the explosion sound is related to any of the outages.
Several people in the neighborhood say they started experiencing power glitches shortly before midnight. They say having no power throughout the night meant struggling to sleep with the heat.
Con Edison asked residents in the Southwest Bronx to limit their energy use while crews work on the repairs. This includes limiting use of appliances such as washers, dryers and multiple AC units.
Con Edison asked people in the eastern part of Brooklyn to conserve energy as well while crews repair equipment.
Con Edison did not have an estimate on when service will be restored as of noon.
The city has opened free cooling centers open around the borough.
