A person was injured after being struck by an MTA basket meant to catch falling debris from elevated tracks.

The incident happened at the Alabama Avenue J train station in East New York just before 12 p.m. Sunday.

News 12 is told that MTA crews were performing maintenance at the station when a pedestrian was struck by the wire basket. The baskets were installed and designed to help catch falling debris from the tracks, which has previously been an issue across the city.

The FDNY responded to the scene and transported the victim to Jamaica Hospital, where they were in serious condition.

The MTA told News 12 in a statement that: "This is unacceptable and we are concerned for the person who may have been struck. We are investigating this isolated incident and undertaking a thorough review of procedures to ensure it never happens again."

The investigation into what exactly happened is ongoing.
