Violence erupted at a memorial for two young men gunned down over the weekend, leaving another young man in the hospital.
Chief Rodney Harrison says his detectives are working tirelessly, but also says now more than ever they need the community’s help.
“We’re concerned about it, and I’ve been expressing that quite often,” says Chief Harrison.
In the middle of a memorial for 16-year-old Kleimer Mendez and 18-year-old Antonio Villa Monday, gunfire erupted striking a 22-year-old man in the shoulder.
“About 50 yards away two individuals were firing their guns and striking an individual, so this has become problematic,” says Harrison.
The two teens were killed just 24 hours prior after police say someone in an SUV started shooting into George Walker Jr. Park Sunday night. Another teenager was also hurt.
“It’s become a very, very personal beef between what looks like to be gangs,” says Harrison.
Mendez’s family didn’t want to speak on camera, but friends of both teens say the two who were close friends, loved music and playing basketball. The NYPD says it believes last night’s shooting was some kind of retaliation for the prior shooting and worry this is only going to continue.
“That’s one of the things were saying, you know one gang, but she does another gang and then retaliation comes so that’s a major, major problem that something we’re seeing throughout the city. We got to get ahead of it and it’s going to need a group effort in order to really hurt the violence from occurring throughout the city,” says Harrison.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
