Police say a man released from Rikers Island to enforce social distancing is back in custody after being accused of raping a woman in East Flatbush.
The man was in jail on rape charges. Police say officers got a call before 6 a.m. Saturday about an assault on East New York Avenue.
When officers arrived, they say they found a 58-year-old woman who told them that an unidentified man had sexually assaulted her.
Police say they arrested 57-year-old Robert Pondexter, who is facing multiple charges including rape, sexual abuse and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
They say Pondexter was released 10 days ago.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the district attorney's office said, "This defendant’s parole hold was lifted and he was released after it was revealed in Court that his case was going to be dismissed because the victims were not cooperative.”
