Five unions representing more than half of the unionized LIRR workforce have just days to come to an agreement, or the transit system could be derailed. If a deal is not reached by midnight Thursday, service on the LIRR could shut down.
The strike wouldn't only affect commuters, but also residents who live nearby train tracks. The new Station Yards development also relies heavily on LIRR service. Many people have moved there specifically for easy access to New York City.
The MTA says it plans to run limited weekday shuttle buses from Ronkonkoma, Hicksville, and Bellmore to help commuters get into Manhattan.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainman, which represents nearly 600 LIRR workers, is expected to announce the results of its vote Monday. It’s one of five unions involved in ongoing contract negotiations with the MTA.
