Community members gathered for a vigil Thursday outside the home of Deborah Danner, the 66-year-old mentally ill woman shot and killed by an NYPD officer earlier in the week.

NYPD Sgt. Hugh Barry shot her twice in the stomach on Tuesday after she allegedly swung a bat at him.

Barry, an eight-year veteran of the force, was responding to a 911 call of an emotionally disturbed person inside the Jamie Towers apartment building. The Bronx District Attorney's Office says it is launching a full investigation into the shooting. 

"These actions don't have any justification, this is wrong," said state Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., who appeared alongside other lawmakers and members of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization. The commanding officer of the NYPD's 43rd Precinct also attended the vigil.

Members of the NAACP spoke at the vigil and announced their own investigation. 

Community leaders added that more needs to be done to train police to handle those with mental health illness in the community. Earlier in the week, the mayor and the NYPD's commissioner both criticized Barry's handling of the situation.
