Community members in West Farms are calling for the African burial grounds at the Beck Presbyterian Memorial Church to be transformed into a memorial garden. The church was damaged by a fire in July, and advocates and residents say it’s time to honor those who were forgotten.
Earlier this year, developers proposed turning the property into a 116-unit affordable housing complex. Bronx Community Board 6 rejected that plan and instead voiced support for a new proposal to create a memorial garden and community center, in partnership with Phipps Neighborhoods.
Community leaders like Jeanette Bocanegra say they want future generations to learn about the area’s past.
"This space can signify resiliency and restoration," she said.
