Community members in West Farms are calling for the African burial grounds at the Beck Presbyterian Memorial Church to be transformed into a memorial garden.

The church was damaged by a fire in July, and advocates and residents say it’s time to honor those who were forgotten.

Earlier this year, developers proposed turning the property into a 116-unit affordable housing complex. Bronx Community Board 6 rejected that plan. Some community members have asked Phipps Houses, a housing organization, to consider pitching an alternative proposal for a memorial garden at the church. Community Board 6 has not discussed any partnership with Phipps just yet.

Community leaders like Jeanette Bocanegra say they want future generations to learn about the area’s past.

"This space can signify resiliency and restoration," she said.
