One Puerto Rican artist who came to New York following Hurricane Maria in 2017 is creating an exhibit to honor the lives lost.  

“It was devastating to see my father, who was in Puerto Rico, go though the hurricane, sheltered in his bathroom on an eight-floor building,” said Marcela Guerrero, whose upcoming exhibit will be on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art.  

The exhibit will focus on the recovery and aftermath of Maria. It is set to take up the entire sixth floor of the museum. Artwork from 20 different artists based out of Puerto Rico, the U.S. and Europe will be on display. 

“I think the exhibition will be an opportunity for people, all the Puerto Ricans that live in the States, and New York, Caribbeans to come and see a little bit of themselves reflected and to process this moment that's been so hard on so many people,” said Guerrero. 

The exhibit will open up to the public on Nov. 23 and will be on display until April 23. Whitney Museum staff says there will be a preview of the exhibit starting on Nov. 17.
