City leaders, community advocates and New Yorkers
came together on City Hall Steps Tuesday to pay respects and honor the 20
people who have died while in custody of the city’s Department of Correction
since 2021.
While the event was centered around paying respects to those
that have been lost, organizers are also calling for the city to address
conditions at Rikers Island.
The city’s Department of Correction says they are focused on
creating a safer and more humane environment to their staff and everyone in custody.
