There are currently 275 charter schools across New York City, and advocates are calling on state legislators to support Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget plan to eliminate the regional cap on the city’s charter schools.
Assembly Member John Zaccaro is one of the elected officials in favor of lifting the cap, saying that parents need options for their kids for the upcoming school year.
One advocacy group leader says it’s not about making more children attend charter schools, but offering them the choice.
“We’re out here fighting, in the cold,” said Crystal McQueen, executive director of StudentsFirstNY. “This is for our kids.”
The state’s budget deadline is April 1, and rallyers say in the coming weeks they’ll continue fighting to remove the charter cap.
