Fire departments across New York are looking for help. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York says volunteer numbers are dropping, and now, a statewide effort is underway to bring in new recruits. As part of the annual “RecruitNYDepartment” campaign, departments are opening their doors this weekend, giving the public a firsthand look at what it takes to serve.

Officials with the Plainview Volunteer Fire Department say the need is clear. “We have 78 volunteers right now. We’d like to have about 200,” said Plainview Fire Chief Andrew Cohen.

Departments hope the hands-on demonstrations will encourage people to join. The role comes with benefits like tax breaks, college incentives, and strong bonds with fellow firefighters. For Samantha White, what started as something social quickly became something more. “I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do,” she said.

During the demonstrations, visitors can get a feel for the job, from handling fire hoses to climbing high into the air on ladder trucks. It’s a demanding role, but firefighters say is worth it. “To save a life, that’s the most rewarding part,” Chief Cohen said.

Departments say the need for volunteers is urgent, and they’re hoping more people will step up. RecruitNY events continue through the weekend at fire departments across the state.
