Refugees from different countries gathered in the city Sunday to raise awareness about their fight for permanent residency in the U.S. as their temporary protected statuses end.

National TPS Alliance is pushing back against the Trump administration's 2017 termination of temporary protected status, which is given to people fleeing countries affected by civil conflict or natural disaster.

For 23-year-old Naischa Vilme, who came to the U.S. 10 years ago after a major earthquake in Haiti, she says having to leave this country would be devastating.

"I would be going back to a country that I haven't been in so many years…knowing that at any given point this status may be taken away from you and you're going to have to start over somewhere else, and all of this would have been for nothing," Vilme says.

She says she's been given a temporary extension on her TPS after taking legal action against the termination.

The National TPS Alliance has been traveling across the country on a bus from California to raise awareness through their “Road to Justice” initiative.

Organizers say that as they continue making their way around the country on in their fight for permanent residency, their last stop will be Friday in Washington D.C., where they plan to hold a press conference to amplify their voices.

With Joe Biden as the president elect, the organization says they hope he can help their cause.
