Remote learning kicked off Wednesday for New York City public schools as teachers continued to rally against unsafe conditions at area schools.

News 12 spoke to a Bronx mother, Angela Torres, who says she’s convinced she made the right decision to send her daughter full remote this year, even if they had a little trouble logging on Wednesday morning.

"The live instruction that my daughter is going to be receiving on a daily basis, that's something that’s guaranteed,” said Torres.

The Department of Education announced Tuesday that live instruction is no longer required for blended learning students.

"I think we should be valuing our students more than what we are,” said Torres.

Teachers say the city isn’t prepared for hybrid or remote learning - short of staff, lacking supplies and signage, and with COVID-19 infections already popping up among the teachers.

"I’m concerned that we’re not prepared with the proper PPE or how to distribute it or the proper protocols,” said TAFT Campus Teacher Justine Wagner.

Wagner and many other teachers across the city are working outside, refusing to go into school buildings because of the conditions.

"Honestly if I walked in the school and didn’t know there was COVID-19, I would not know there was ever COVID-19. It’s no different than anything I’ve ever seen before,” said Wagner.

Teachers also tell News 12 they’re being asked to do the impossible with fewer resources than ever and that the rushed way in-person learning is being done isn't safe for students and teachers.

News 12 has reached out to the Department of Education for an update on the change and has not heard back yet.
