Rep. Ocasio-Cortez speaks at veteran care town hall
A Bronx town hall brought out veterans, the nurses who care for them and even U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with ideas about what needs to be done to get the VA back in action.
Dozens filed into P.S. 83 Wednesday night, fighting for access to health care at the VA. Event speakers said the 2018 Mission Act needs to go. The act includes letting some of the millions of veterans seeking services at the VA see private doctors.
Members of the VA nurses union National Nurses United, which organized the event, say that filling the nearly 40,000 open VA jobs and increasing funding will replace the need for privatization.
Ocasio-Cortez spoke, saying veteran care should not be for sale.
Veterans say they think the VA needs to be fixed, and that private and public options could work together. They add that they'll keep fighting for their cause, holding more town halls and meetings across the city.
