Residents in Kingsbridge said shopping carts are being abandoned around their neighborhood, and they’re calling it an eyesore.
“Every day,” said Ghamaul Bolden, of Kingsbridge. “Like right now, as we’re speaking, through the day constantly.”
“[The carts are] mainly by the bottom of the steps [near Van Cortlandt Park South], and then really to the end of Bailey Avenue,” said Jon Scott, of Kingsbridge.
News 12 came across about a dozen carts on Bailey Avenue, Broadway and Kingsbridge Avenue.
The metal shopping carts with red handles belonged to BJ’s Wholesale Club, which is located inside of the Riverdale Crossing shopping center near Broadway.
The carts were parked outside of apartment buildings and businesses. Some of them had trash inside.
“[The carts] really don’t need to be here because it’s a residential area,” said Bolden.
“It’s an inconvenience,” Scott said. “Someone should do something about it.”
Council Member Eric Dinowitz, who represents Kingsbridge as part of District 11, said he hears the complaints.
“We’ve been getting some more of these complaints, so we reached out to BJ's,” Dinowitz said. “They said they’re hiring a third party to help cleanup these shopping carts.”
Dinowitz said his office also calls the Department of Sanitation.
A DSNY spokesperson told News 12 that it is illegal to leave shopping carts on city streets.
Dinowitz suggested people report the carts to 311 and be good citizens.
“BJ’s isn’t going out there and leaving shopping carts all over the community, people are,” Dinowitz said. “So, I encourage people to talk to their friends and neighbors and make sure they know this is our community, our neighborhood; and we have a job to do to keep it clean.”
News 12 reached out to BJ’s Wholesale Club for comment and did not hear back.
