They help you cross the street and wave to you as you walk to school, and now they have a day all to themselves.
It's Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, giving parents, teachers and students a chance to thank their safety officers.
Pauline Lomax has been helping kids get to and from school safely for 23 years, and the last three have been at P.S. 20 in the Bronx where parents and teachers say she is like family.
She says it's her duty to make sure the 1,100 children who come to school every morning get there safely.
Lomax says the joy of helping the students, plus an occasional hug and thank you, is priceless.
